The names of the first ministers in Germany’s new government have been announced

The Christian Democratic Union (CDU) has revealed the names of its ministers for the new government, which is expected to be led by party leader Friedrich Merz. This was reported by Tagesschau.

In the new government, the CDU will hold 7 out of 17 ministerial positions. The 62-year-old Johann Wadephul, deputy head of the CDU faction in the Bundestag responsible for foreign policy and defense, will become the Minister of Foreign Affairs.

Additionally, the Ministry of Economics will be headed by Katarina Reiche, while the Minister of Transport will be Bundestag deputy Patrick Schneider from the CDU. The new Ministry for Digitalization and State Modernization will be led by Carsten Wildberger, Chairman of the Board of Ceconomy AG and MediaMarktSaturn Group.

Nina Warken from Baden-Württemberg will lead the Ministry of Health, and Karin Prien, the Minister of Education in Schleswig-Holstein, will become the head of the Federal Ministry of Education and Family Affairs. On the same day, the head of the CSU, Markus Söder, will present the names of three ministers from his party.

The cabinet members from the Social Democratic Party will be announced later in the day at a small party congress in Berlin, after the SPD approves the coalition agreement.

On May 6, the Bundestag is expected to elect Merz as Chancellor. In the early federal elections held on February 23, the conservative CDU/CSU won the most votes, despite internal divisions within the conservative camp and the rising popularity of the Alternative for Germany (AfD) party.
