French Socialists abstain from no-confidence vote against Bayrou

The Socialist Party has chosen not to support a no-confidence motion against François Bayrou’s government, despite objections to his use of a special procedure to pass the budget without parliamentary approval.

Following a party bureau meeting on Monday, socialist leaders decided to abstain from the vote, a move that virtually ensures Bayrou’s government will remain in power—even with the right-wing National Rally backing his dismissal.

The decision reflects internal divisions within the party. Some members believe delaying the budget further would be irresponsible, while others want to retaliate against Bayrou’s controversial remarks about a “migration flood,” which they view as echoing right-wing rhetoric.

Although they won’t back the current no-confidence motion, the socialists intend to introduce their own in response to Bayrou’s migration comments. However, without support from the National Rally, it is unlikely to succeed.
