Brussels set for massive strike as unions protest new government’s policies

Belgian trade unions are set to organize a large-scale strike in Brussels on Thursday, February 13, in opposition to the new federal government headed by Flemish nationalist leader Bart De Wever.

This follows a January protest where approximately 30,000 people gathered in Brussels to express their discontent with pension reforms proposed by De Wever’s government. Public sector unions had previously announced plans for monthly protests on the 13th of each month.

For the February 13 demonstration, the unions aim to mobilize double the number of participants. Their concerns focus on “imbalances” within the coalition agreement, issues surrounding public services, and the rising cost of living.

The national demonstration will begin at 10:30 AM, with participants marching from the northern to the southern parts of Brussels. Public services are expected to face significant disruptions, including public transport, postal services, and schools.

In addition, a strike by “a large number of service and security workers” at Brussels Airport will result in the cancellation of all flights scheduled for February 13.

The strike will also impact other cities in Belgium, including Antwerp, which has already warned of potential disruptions to waste collection on the day of the protest.

It’s important to note that Bart De Wever’s new government officially took office on February 3, nearly eight months after the parliamentary elections.
