Moldova to end state of emergency in energy sector amid stabilized gas supply

Moldovan Prime Minister Dorin Recean has announced that he will not request Parliament to extend the state of emergency in the energy sector, which is set to expire on Sunday, February 16.

Recean explained that Moldova has established “the necessary conditions for supplying natural gas to the Transnistrian region without a state of emergency.”

“This was necessary in order to be able to buy gas and electricity, considering that Russia halted gas supplies to the Transnistrian region,” he added.

As a result, a meeting of the Moldovan Government’s Emergency Situations Commission was held on Thursday, where several decisions were made to offset energy tariffs for the population. These costs will be covered with assistance from the European Union.

It is important to note that since December 16, a 60-day state of emergency has been in effect across Moldova due to the suspension of gas supplies to Transnistria, which provides electricity for the entire country. Russian gas deliveries to Transnistria stopped on January 1 after Ukraine halted the transit of gas through its territory.
