The intensification of immigration raids and deportations under President Donald Trump’s administration has led many migrants, including legal ones, to fear going to work, destabilizing key sectors of the economy, reports The Wall Street Journal.
This is especially affecting construction, hospitality, and healthcare industries, where there is already a shortage of workers. According to the publication, the Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) is detaining an average of 822 people per day — more than twice as many as in 2024.
In his first speech after the inauguration on January 20, Trump promised to immediately stop the influx of illegal immigrants into the country and begin mass deportations. He also declared a state of emergency due to the situation at the southern border.
According to the US Border Security Coordinator Tom Homan, more than 4,000 migrants were deported from the country in the first week of Trump’s presidency.
