Hungary’s Foreign Minister says Trump’s imposition of 25 percent duties is Brussels’ fault

Hungary’s Foreign Minister, Péter Szijjártó, has accused Brussels of being responsible for U.S. President Donald Trump’s decision to impose 25% tariffs on European goods. Szijjártó made this statement in a Facebook post on Thursday.

The Hungarian minister commented on the situation after the first meeting of Trump’s government during his second term, where the imposition of tariffs on EU-made products was discussed. He pointed out that since November of last year, it has been clear that the U.S. elected a patriotic president, and Brussels knew of his intention to bring trade relations into balance. However, according to Szijjártó, the European Commission did not take any action, even though they knew that Washington would impose tariffs if the situation remained unchanged.

Szijjártó also criticized the Brussels bureaucracy, claiming it is “killing the European economy.” He reminded everyone of the failed sanctions against Russia, the tariffs on Chinese electric vehicle industry, and the European Union’s inability to reach agreements with the United States.

In his view, Brussels has made mistakes that need to be corrected in Budapest. Hungary will continue bilateral negotiations with the U.S., aiming to strengthen Hungarian-American economic cooperation in the coming months.
