US Secretary of State Marco Rubio announced that European sanctions would be discussed in the event of a ceasefire agreement in Ukraine. According to him, sanctions will be addressed in any ceasefire agreement, and the US plans to contact Russia to hear its position on the matter.
Rubio emphasized that the US expects a positive response from Russia, adding that there is no military solution to the conflict. He also mentioned that the US and Ukraine had agreed on a 30-day ceasefire, provided that Moscow takes a similar step. In return, the US agreed to resume military aid to Ukraine and intelligence sharing.
Kremlin representatives stated they were awaiting details from the negotiations, noting the lack of agreement on a meeting between Presidents Donald Trump and Vladimir Putin. UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer supported the “progress in talks” between Ukraine and the US, urging for increased efforts to achieve a stable peace, including prosecuting Putin in court.
Trump had previously promised to resolve the conflict in Ukraine and, if he returns to the White House, he would place the responsibility for ensuring security guarantees for Ukraine on the EU. Meanwhile, the EU announced that sanctions against Russia would not be lifted unless the US takes steps in that direction, while announcing an independent sanctions policy.
