The U.S. administration will hold a meeting in the coming days to discuss the next steps in its engagement with Russia regarding the resolution of the situation in Ukraine. The final decision will be made by President Donald Trump.
This was announced by U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio at a press conference following the G7 foreign ministers’ meeting in Quebec.
In our view, yesterday’s contacts between President Putin and Special Envoy Whitcoff were very positive and productive. He is already on his way back, and hopefully, we will meet this weekend to thoroughly assess Russia’s position. Then the president will decide on the next steps, Rubio said.
He noted that Washington views its current engagement with Moscow with cautious optimism. The U.S. does not believe that Russia is stalling negotiations on Ukraine but rather sees signs of progress.
Earlier, President Donald Trump also stated that Whitcoff’s meeting with Putin was productive and took place in a positive atmosphere.
