Canada’s new prime minister announces first official visits

Canada’s new Prime Minister, Mark Carney, will make his first official visits next week to France and the United Kingdom.

Carney made this announcement to journalists shortly after officially assuming office as Prime Minister. He stated that he received an invitation from French President Emmanuel Macron “to discuss a range of issues, both economic—regarding the strengthening of trade relations—and security matters in Europe and Canada.”

“I will have similar discussions with the Prime Minister of the United Kingdom,” Carney added.

He emphasized that enhancing security and diversifying trade are key priorities for his government.

“There are many opportunities for this both in France and the United Kingdom. Moreover, there are historical ties,” the Canadian Prime Minister noted.

Carney also mentioned that he currently has no concrete plans for an official visit to the United States.

“I look forward to speaking with President Trump at the appropriate time,” he said.

Mark Carney took office as Canada’s Prime Minister on March 14—amid an ongoing trade war with the U.S.

Previously, he stated that Canada would never become part of the United States and pledged to maintain tariffs on American goods until the U.S. shows “respect.”
