On Monday, the authorities in Duisburg decided to close several schools after they received threatening letters.
According to Die Welt, due to the threatening situation, many students were unable to attend school on Monday. Approximately 18,000 pupils from 15 primary and two secondary schools were affected, according to the press service of the Düsseldorf district administration.
As a result, several schools displayed signs reading “School Closed,” and students switched to remote learning. According to the police, the administration of Gesamtschule-Mitte received a letter on Friday containing threats and far-right statements. According to Bild newspaper, the letter mentioned “purges.” The unknown sender also reported crimes that were allegedly planned to occur at the school on Monday.
On Sunday, the same school received a second threatening letter, which was also sent to many other schools in the city. Police stated that experts from the Duisburg State Security Service, based on an analysis of the situation, concluded that the threats did not pose a real danger.
Nevertheless, the police increased the presence of law enforcement at the affected schools to minimize any potential risks. The investigation into the threatening letters is ongoing.
