Trump extends Biden’s sanctions against Russia

U.S. President Donald Trump has signed an executive order extending the state of emergency declared in April 2021 by his predecessor, Joe Biden, due to harmful activities by Russia, along with the associated sanctions.

The corresponding document has been published in the U.S. Federal Register.

It is noted that the state of emergency introduced in 2021 was intended to “counter the unusual and extraordinary threat to the national security, foreign policy, and economy of the United States posed by certain harmful foreign activities of the Government of the Russian Federation.”

Among the specific measures cited are efforts “aimed at undermining free and fair democratic elections and democratic institutions in the United States and its allies and partners.”

Also mentioned are malicious cyber activities, the use of transnational corruption to influence foreign governments, persecution of dissidents and journalists, destabilization of regional security, and violations of international law.

“For this reason, the national emergency declared in Executive Order 14024, expanded by Executive Order 14066 and supplemented by Executive Orders 14039, 14068, 14071, and 14114, must continue beyond April 15, 2025. Therefore, in accordance with section 202(d) of the National Emergencies Act (50 U.S.C. 1622(d)), I am continuing for one year the national emergency declared in Executive Order 14024,” the order states.
