The United States canceled 139 grants worth $215 million, including projects for feminists in Tunisia and freelancers in Brazil. This information was published on the X account of the U.S. Government Accountability Office.
Elon Musk’s agency listed some of the canceled grants:
$1.4 million to prevent internet fragmentation in Brazil;
$750,000 to support the resilience and adaptation of civil society in Kyrgyzstan;
$1 million to strengthen trust and maintain hope in Sri Lanka;
$2 million to promote democratic culture in Armenia;
$5.2 million for media diversity and combating disinformation in the UK;
$2.5 million to encourage critical civic engagement in Uzbekistan;
$2 million to enhance the resilience and involvement of news editorial teams in Moldova;
$1 million to protect freelancers’ rights in Brazil;
$2.4 million to combat disinformation through creative content in Belarus;
$1.7 million for independent media supporting peace and democracy in Europe;
$1.5 million for a gendered approach to justice and accountability led by women;
$900,000 to create a space for uniting women in Mauritania;
$750,000 to create a migrant domestic workers movement in Lebanon;
$740,000 for a feminist initiative on freedom of speech in Tunisia.
It was also previously reported that all positions in the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) not mandated by law will be eliminated by the fall.
Additionally, the Trump administration closed 83% of USAID programs.
