In the wake of Pope Francis’ death, a no-fly zone has been enforced over Rome as the city begins preparations for the late pontiff’s funeral.
Rome’s prefect, Lamberto Giannini, confirmed that a heightened security operation is already underway. “We already have a no-fly zone in place, and we are giving maximum attention to this type of threat,” he said.
Giannini also noted that further details on safety protocols will be shared once officials determine the date of the funeral and estimate attendance.
Pope Francis died on the morning of April 21 at 7:35 a.m. at his Vatican residence. Officials report that the pontiff suffered a stroke, which resulted in a coma and subsequent heart failure.
Media outlets indicate that U.S. President Donald Trump is anticipated to travel to the Vatican for the funeral later this week.
