U.S. Vice President J.D. Vance has stated that the United States has proposed a peace agreement to Russia and Ukraine that includes a territorial exchange and a freeze in the conflict roughly along the current lines of engagement. This was reported by Bloomberg.
According to Vance, both Ukraine and Russia would have to relinquish some of the territories currently under their control. “There will have to be some territorial exchanges,” Vance said.
He noted that in the end, the new dividing line will likely not exactly match the current front line. “Somewhere near the current lines — that’s where I think the new lines of conflict will ultimately lie,” Vance told journalists on Wednesday during a visit to the Taj Mahal in India.
In his words, to stop the killing, both sides need to “lay down their arms, freeze this thing, and start building a better Russia and a better Ukraine.”
Last week, U.S. President Donald Trump warned that he is prepared to abandon efforts to end the war in Ukraine if an agreement is not reached soon.
Vance added that the United States has made a “very clear proposal” to both Russia and Ukraine regarding the path to a peace agreement, emphasizing that “the time has come for them to either say ‘yes,’ or for the United States to step away from the process.”
Despite the gravity of the situation, Vance expressed optimism about the negotiations, saying he believes all parties have so far negotiated in good faith.
