Serbian parliament deputies fight during session

On Monday, during a session of the Serbian Parliament, a fight broke out between deputies from the ruling party, opposition members, and some ministers, prompting the Parliament’s security service to intervene.

The incident occurred during the first session after the tragedy in Novi Sad earlier this month, where 15 people were killed when a roof collapsed at the city’s railway station.

Among the 50 items on the agenda for the session was a discussion of the 2025 budget. The confrontation happened even before the official debates began. When the ministers entered the chamber, opposition representatives greeted them with the words “Your hands are bloody,” a phrase often emphasized during protests following the Novi Sad tragedy. The opposition, activists, and demonstrators accuse the government of corruption and demand accountability for those responsible for the tragedy.

Security staff separated the parties, but tensions escalated when several deputies attempted to remove a provocative banner that had been hung on the balcony of the parliamentary hall. Speaker Ana Brnabić turned off all microphones, preventing a public broadcast of the events. She only briefly turned the sound back on to call for “peace, dignity, and the continuation of the session.”

The speaker then announced a break and invited representatives from all parliamentary factions for consultations.
