Berlin boosts security ahead of basketball game amid Middle East tensions

Berlin authorities have intensified security protocols for the basketball game between Alba Berlin and Maccabi Tel Aviv at the Uber Arena tomorrow. The measures come amid heightened concerns about provocations and attacks linked to the ongoing Middle East conflict.

Starting November 27, strict security zones have been established around both the Uber Arena and the Courtyard by Marriott hotel in Mitte, where the Israeli team is staying. Access is tightly controlled, requiring proper identification, and restrictions include bans on demonstrations, parking, vehicle traffic, and the carrying of weapons or knives.

Police are focusing on preemptive measures, including “preventive discussions” with individuals known for antisemitic actions. This includes some residents of Neukölln previously associated with controversial activities.

The enhanced precautions follow similar incidents in Amsterdam and Paris, where attacks were reported after matches involving Israeli teams.
