A powerful hurricane named “Conall” swept through the Netherlands on Wednesday, leaving widespread damage and one confirmed fatality. The storm brought wind gusts reaching up to 130 meters per second and forced the cancellation of some ferry services.
In the town of Lochem, a 19-year-old woman was killed when a tree fell on her as she was riding her bicycle.
The storm also uprooted dozens of trees, which fell on houses and cars and blocked roads. Fortunately, no other injuries were reported. The Dutch Association of Insurance Companies estimated the financial damage from the storm at over one million euros.
Earlier in the week, Storm “Bert” had already disrupted power and communication in the UK and Ireland.
Last week, severe weather also led to tens of thousands of homes in Finland losing electricity, resulting in significant communication disruptions.
