Prime Minister Viktor Orbán: “No one should die on the front lines on Christmas Day”

Prime Minister Viktor Orbán has called for a ceasefire between Russia and Ukraine during the Christmas period, urging that “at least at Christmas, no one should die on the front line.”

Speaking on public radio Friday, he outlined Hungary’s recent proposal for a ceasefire and a potential exchange of prisoners of war, a gesture he said could bring joy to hundreds of thousands.

One side has accepted the proposal, while the other seems to reject it for now, Orbán stated, adding that there are still days left until Christmas, and he remains hopeful for a change in the situation.

He praised Hungary’s diplomatic efforts, noting that the country had reached out to global powers, including the United States, Russia, European nations and Turkey, to advocate for a brief ceasefire in line with Hungary’s values as “a thousand-year-old Christian European state.”

Orbán expressed optimism about a shift in international dynamics, particularly with the anticipated return of Donald Trump to office. “Once Trump is back, the world will make an about-turn,” he said, predicting that major changes could take place within “a day or two after January 20” when the new U.S. administration begins its work. He believes these changes will significantly influence Europe and issues critical to Hungary.

Orbán also commented on current challenges, noting that “Germany and France’s governments have faltered” and that Syria, a major source of migration in recent years, has seen its government toppled. However, he assured that calmer times are ahead: “No longer will we have to navigate stormy seas; calmer waters lie before us.”
