The Iranian newspaper Hamshari reports that the president has referred the matter to the Supreme National Security Council, the key decision-making body in Iran. This move could lead to a partial repeal of the law. The new legislation included harsh measures such as heavy fines, a travel ban, and confiscation of property, particularly targeting well-known public figures.
A recent incident involving Iranian musician Parastu Ahmadi, who performed without a hijab and posted the video on YouTube, caused public outcry. She and her band members were arrested for “violating Islamic norms,” but were soon released.
Amid public pressure and disagreements within the government, the law’s implementation has been temporarily suspended. Despite the threat of penalties, many women in large cities across Iran continue to openly protest the mandatory hijab law.
