The European Parliament is increasingly becoming the subject of investigations related to various offenses.
According to a report prepared for the Budget Control Committee, the activities of MEPs and their staff are marked by serious misconduct. The publication BILD has revealed details of the alleged crimes. Suspicions of multimillion-euro fraud are under investigation: seven MEPs and six of their staff members allegedly unlawfully received funds intended to pay assistants in 2022.
A total of €2.9 million allocated for party funding was misused. To date, only a small portion—€49,000—has been recovered. Two cases of improper reimbursement for medical expenses and compensation for work abroad have been identified, causing a total financial loss of €152,000 to the budget. In 2023, 75 thefts were reported within European Parliament buildings. The total value of stolen items amounted to €13,138, raising concerns about the institution’s security measures.
In 2023, 88 employees filed complaints about psychological pressure and sexual harassment, a rise of 33 cases compared to the previous year. These complaints included: 38 cases of bullying, 12 cases of sexual harassment, 38 other workplace conflicts.
Sanctions were imposed in four cases of sexual harassment involving Parliament staff.
