On Sunday, Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico arrived at the Kremlin for talks with Russian President Vladimir Putin.
Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov stated that Fico’s visit had been planned in advance. According to Peskov, the meeting is likely to address the issue of Russian gas supplies, although specific details will become clear after the talks conclude.
This visit marks Fico’s first trip to Russia since his return to power in 2023. Prior to him, Austrian Chancellor Karl Nehammer and Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán also visited Russia.
Earlier, Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić noted that Robert Fico intended to discuss gas supplies with Putin beyond 2024. Initially, the Slovak Prime Minister’s visit was scheduled for Monday, December 23.
Slovakia has repeatedly advocated for extending the agreement between Ukraine and Russia on the transit of Russian gas, which is set to expire in 2024. However, Kyiv has ruled out the possibility of renewing the transit contract with Gazprom.
