The British Army has deployed a radio frequency directed energy weapon (RFDEW) for the first time, capable of disabling drones using radio waves, according to The Telegraph.
RFDEW can detect, track, and neutralize threats on land, in the air, and at sea. This system, known as the “drone killer,” can incapacitate drones at distances of up to one kilometer almost instantly.
A key advantage of this new technology is its cost efficiency: each “shot” costs only 10 pence (approximately 12 cents). Additionally, its high level of automation allows a single operator to control the system, and its compact design makes it easy to mount on military vehicles.
The weapon uses high-frequency radio waves to disrupt or damage critical electronic components inside drones, rendering them completely inoperative.
Recent trials of the RFDEW system were conducted at a testing range in West Wales with the participation of the Royal Artillery’s experimental and development unit.
