A passenger plane belonging to Azerbaijan Airlines crashed near the city of Aktau in Kazakhstan on Wednesday, with initial reports indicating that 25 people survived. The flight, originally traveling from Baku to Grozny in Russia’s Chechnya, was rerouted due to fog.
The Kazakh Ministry of Emergencies confirmed that emergency services were actively working to extinguish a fire at the crash site. Local media reported that the aircraft was carrying 67 passengers and five crew members. According to Kazakhstan’s transport ministry, the plane had 62 passengers and five crew on board.
“A plane doing the Baku-Grozny route crashed near the city of Aktau. It belongs to Azerbaijan Airlines,” the ministry said in a statement on Telegram.
Azerbaijan Airlines, the national carrier, confirmed that the Embraer 190 aircraft made an emergency landing approximately three kilometers from Aktau, an oil and gas hub located on the eastern shore of the Caspian Sea.
“Information about casualties is currently being clarified but, according to preliminary information, there are survivors,” the Ministry of Emergencies said.
