Romania to close 30 checkpoints from the new year due to Schengen accession

Starting January 1, 2025, Romania will close 30 land border crossing points with Hungary and Bulgaria as it joins the Schengen Area.

This change is related to the removal of controls at land borders, as stipulated by Schengen rules. However, selective document checks at these borders may temporarily continue.

The decision to lift border controls was made by the EU Council on December 12, 2024. It became possible after Austria lifted its blockade, which had long hindered Bulgaria and Romania’s accession to Schengen.

Earlier, on March 30, 2024, Bulgaria and Romania partially joined Schengen by removing checks at airports and seaports. Full integration into the area was achieved through agreements within the EU.
