6 out of 10 French people demand Macron’s resignation, poll finds

A recent poll by Odoxa-Backbone Consulting, published by Le Figaro, reveals that a growing majority of French citizens are calling for President Emmanuel Macron’s resignation. As of January 2025, 61% of French people want him to step down—up 7 percentage points from September and 2 points from December.

The desire for Macron’s resignation is especially strong among National Rally (RN) and France Insoumise supporters, with 85% and 92% backing his departure, respectively. On the flip side, 90% of Macron’s own party members oppose it.

Macron’s popularity continues to plummet, with 71% of respondents expressing concern about his leadership and 65% doubting his commitment to democratic values. While the poll results paint a bleak picture for the president, not everyone agrees on the legitimacy of such questions. Frédéric Dabi, director of Ifop, criticized polling organizations for asking about the president’s resignation, arguing it could be politically charged. Dabi believes that the French are largely focused on the 2027 presidential election, with few actually calling for Macron’s departure.

However, Celine Bracq, CEO of Odoxa, disagreed, stating that the question of Macron’s resignation is indeed part of the public discourse. “Politicians are calling for it, and journalists are discussing it. Why shouldn’t we ask the French what they think?” she argued. The survey, conducted online with 1,005 participants, carries a margin of error between 1.4 and 3.1 points.
