The UK is grappling with heavy snowfall, rain, and flooding, causing significant disruptions to travel. Dozens of flights and trains have been delayed or canceled, and airports in northern England have temporarily closed runways due to the adverse weather. The bad conditions are expected to continue on Monday, with more snow and rain forecasted.
The UK Met Office has issued warnings for snow, ice, and rain across much of the country, while the Environment Agency has highlighted the risk of flooding in over 150 areas due to heavy rainfall and melting snow. National Rail reported that many trains have been delayed or canceled as a result of flooding and heavy rain.
Several key roads in northern and central England have been closed due to the combined effects of snow and flooding, according to the National Highways Service.
Manchester Airport temporarily closed its runways early on Monday morning due to heavy snowfall, following a similar move by Liverpool Airport on Sunday. “Some departures and arrivals may still experience delays,” Manchester Airport warned after reopening its runways.
The Met Office also noted that Monday morning brought the coldest night of the winter so far in some areas, with temperatures in parts of Scotland plummeting to -13.3°C.
