Trump allows for new sanctions against Russia if negotiations are rejected

President Trump meets with Russian President Vladimir Putin at the Group of 20 summit in early July. It’s unclear how the sanctions Trump signed into law Wednesday will affect the personal relationship between the two men.

U.S. President Donald Trump stated on Tuesday that he might consider imposing additional sanctions against Russia if it refuses to engage in negotiations to end the war.

When asked whether he would introduce more sanctions against Russia if Vladimir Putin does not come to the negotiation table, Trump responded: “Sounds likely.”

“We are speaking with [Ukrainian President] Zelensky. We will be speaking with President Putin very soon, and we’ll see what happens and how things unfold,” Trump said.

He criticized the European Union for not spending enough on Ukraine’s defense and mentioned that he would “consider” the issue of whether the United States would send additional weapons to Ukraine. Trump also confirmed that he discussed the war in Ukraine during a recent phone conversation with Chinese President Xi Jinping.

“He has great power, as do we. I told him that this needs to be resolved,” the U.S. President noted.

Trump further mentioned that President Zelensky wants peace: “But it takes two to tango. We’ll see what comes of it.”
