Trump, Orbán, and Pope Francis’ “surprising alliance” could derail support for Ukraine

A “surprising alliance” between Donald Trump, Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán, and Pope Francis could potentially undermine international support for Ukraine, according to The Independent.

The Independent has spoken to Hungary’s ambassador to the Vatican, Eduard Habsburg-Lothringen, who has been critical in attempting to create an international coalition to find a “peace deal” to end the war.

Habsburg-Lothringen highlighted the pivotal influence Pope Francis has had in backing an agreement that may allow Trump to persuade Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky to concede territories to Russia. This potential shift, according to the report, stands in opposition to the stance of other NATO allies, who firmly reject such an approach.

The Pope and Hungary have both called for a ceasefire and diplomatic negotiations to “break the cycle” of the war and move toward a peaceful resolution.
