U.S. opens new missile defense base in Poland to bolster NATO security

The United States is set to officially open a new air defense base in northern Poland on Wednesday, as Poland seeks to reassure its citizens of NATO’s security commitment in the wake of Donald Trump’s election as U.S. president.

Located in Redzikowo near Poland’s Baltic coast, the missile defense base has been in development since the early 2000s. Warsaw regards the base as a strong symbol of the enduring military alliance with Washington, regardless of changes in U.S. leadership.

“It took a while, but this construction proves the geostrategic resolve of the United States,” Polish Foreign Minister Radoslaw Sikorski said in a video message on X, adding that “the Polish-American alliance is strong, regardless of who governs in Warsaw and Washington.”

Polish President Andrzej Duda, who has emphasized his positive relationship with Trump, will attend the base’s opening ceremony. Speaking to reporters on Monday, Duda mentioned that Trump had recently called to convey greetings for Poland’s Independence Day.
