Marek Magierowski, former Polish ambassador to the U.S., has some strong words on the idea of ceding Ukrainian land for peace.
In a recent interview with Onet TV, he warned that any such deal would be disastrous, not just for Ukraine, but for the West, including the U.S. Magierowski argued that a defeat for Ukraine would be a loss for the United States. He emphasized the need to convince Donald Trump that increasing defense spending is crucial for Europe to fend off aggression without always relying on U.S. support.
Trump, according to Magierowski, has often said Europe should handle its own security issues. Still, he believes the U.S. should maintain a strong military presence in Poland and Europe while Trump’s team sorts out priorities.
As for the possibility of a peace deal with Putin, Magierowski expressed uncertainty, especially regarding any talks of giving up Ukrainian territory. He advised Poland’s leaders to convince Trump that such a move would only strengthen Russia and spell defeat for the West. “Trump hates losing,” he said, adding that the U.S. must not let this become a “capitulation.” If they want to avoid a loss, the message is clear: ceding Ukrainian land to Russia isn’t the solution.
