A new poll by the Forsa Institute has revealed a decline in the popularity of Germany’s current Chancellor Olaf Scholz, both among the general electorate and within his own party.
Only 13% of respondents want to see Scholz as the candidate for Chancellor from the Social Democratic Party of Germany (SPD), while 57% prefer Defense Minister Boris Pistorius. The drop in support for Scholz is particularly evident among SPD voters: 58% of them back Pistorius, while only 30% support Scholz.
In a different poll scenario, where Pistorius and Christian Democratic Union (CDU) candidate Friedrich Merz are competing, Pistorius receives 39% of the vote, while Merz only gets 25%.
Even among CDU supporters, Pistorius gains 22%, while Merz enjoys the backing of 59% of his own voters. Analysts note that the poll results show that Pistorius holds influence not only among his own party’s supporters but others as well.
