In a recent interview with NZZ, Hamburg’s regional Rabbi Shlomo Bistritzky shared his advice for Jewish voters in Germany ahead of the upcoming federal elections.
He emphasized the importance of supporting the party that ensures the safety and protection of Jewish life, warning that Jews must choose wisely to prevent a repeat of events like those in Amsterdam. When asked if that meant voting for the AfD, Bistritzky didn’t name any party directly, but instead stressed that political leaders must address the growing concerns of Jews in Germany, especially those considering emigration to Israel due to rising fears.
Bistritzky expressed his belief that more Jews in Germany are contemplating leaving, particularly if the situation worsens like it did in Amsterdam or France. He also criticized the handling of foreign offenders, calling for tougher action. Furthermore, he expressed disappointment in Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock’s continued support for the UN Palestinian Relief Agency, especially after revelations that some of its employees were involved in the October 7th massacre.
While Bistritzky criticized certain policies, he also acknowledged that many Muslim-majority countries, while not necessarily friendly to Jews, do not see them as enemies. He also called for improved surveillance in public spaces to enhance safety.
