It’s official: Republicans secure all three branches in historic power sweep

In a sweeping victory, Republicans are set to control all three branches of the U.S. government after Donald Trump’s decisive win in the 2024 presidential election, alongside major wins down the ballot.

With a 6-3 conservative majority in the Supreme Court and control over both chambers of Congress, the GOP has cemented its influence across the federal government.

Decision Desk HQ projected on Monday that Republicans will hold at least 218 seats in the House of Representatives, securing control. Although some congressional races are still being counted, the GOP has already secured a Senate majority with at least 52 seats, according to Edison Research. The control of Congress will enable Trump to advance an ambitious agenda, including significant tax cuts and a push to reduce the size of the federal government.

Notably, Republican candidate Nick Begich is reported to have defeated Democrat Mary Peltola in Alaska, though the Associated Press has yet to confirm this result. In Colorado, Republican Gabe Evans unseated Democratic incumbent Rep. Yadira Caraveo in the 8th District on Sunday night.

Meanwhile, Orange County, California, is under intense scrutiny as three congressional seats—Districts 47, 45, and 49—are still hanging in the balance. The races are particularly close in District 47, where Democrat David Min has taken a narrow lead over Republican Scott Baugh.

With their consolidated hold on the federal government, Republicans are poised to enact sweeping changes when the new administration takes office in January, setting the stage for a reshaped political landscape.
