Romania’s left-wing Prime Minister Marcel Ciolacu and the leader of the right-wing opposition party AUR, George Simion, are leading in polls ahead of the presidential elections this month, meaning they are likely to face each other in a runoff.
This was revealed by a poll conducted by the sociological company INSCOP.
The survey indicated that Ciolacu, the leader of the Social Democrats, could secure 25.3% of the vote in the first round on November 24, while George Simion, leader of the Alliance for the Unity of Romanians (AUR), would take second place with 19.1%.
Elena Lasconi, leader of the right-wing opposition Union to Save Romania (USR), would receive 14.3% of the vote in the first round.
Former NATO Deputy Secretary General Mircea Joana, running as an independent, would receive 13.3% support, while Nicolae Ciucă, the leader of the Liberals who are in a coalition government with Ciolacu’s Social Democrats, would secure 9.1%.
The second round of voting is scheduled for December 8, with parliamentary elections set for December 1, between the two rounds.
