The faction of the German opposition block, the Christian Democratic Union (CDU) and the Christian Social Union (CSU), intends to repeal the cannabis legalization law before the early elections, according to deputy Alexander Trom.
In March 2024, despite criticism from several federal states and the medical community, the law on cannabis legalization and decriminalization, which had previously been approved by the Bundestag, passed through the Bundesrat. Under this law, starting April 1, it will be legal to possess and grow cannabis.
Earlier, the Prime Minister of Bavaria, Markus Söder, sharply criticized the legalization of cannabis in Germany and promised to limit the law’s application in his federal state. The law has also been criticized by several medical associations and opposition groups, who argue that legalization will only worsen the issue of drug addiction in the country.
In August, more than half of Germany’s population opposed the plans to legalize cannabis, according to a survey by the Forsa Institute.
