Macron warns Europe of dual trade war threat amid Trump’s economic policies

French President Emmanuel Macron has expressed concerns that Europe may face simultaneous trade conflicts with both the United States and China due to the policies of U.S. President-elect Donald Trump.

At a meeting of the European Competitiveness Commission, Macron highlighted the risks of escalating trade tensions. According to Bloomberg, he stated that Europe “is clearly entering the world of tariff wars” and warned that Trump’s policies could “destroy the value chains between Europeans and Americans.”

Trump has proposed imposing tariffs of 10–20% on all foreign goods, with even higher rates for imports from China. Macron suggested that the U.S. might pressure Europe, reportedly saying: “If you are more lenient, we will impose tariffs on you.”

Meanwhile, trade disputes between Europe and China are already heating up. Europe has implemented tariffs on Chinese electric vehicles, prompting Beijing to retaliate with tariffs on European brandy.

In a parallel development, the European Union is reportedly aligning with Trump’s stance on pressuring China. According to Bild, the EU hopes this cooperation will lead to stronger U.S. support for Ukraine and increased pressure on Russia. This strategy was reportedly discussed during a conversation between European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and Trump.

European Parliament President Roberta Metsola emphasized the need for collaboration, stating: “A win-win situation for all is possible,” and urging the U.S. to prioritize cooperation over isolation.

Despite these overtures, Trump has signaled a desire to reduce the U.S. role in aiding Ukraine, calling for the EU to shoulder more responsibility. He reiterated yesterday that ending the war in Ukraine will be a top priority of his administration.
