German Chancellor Olaf Scholz shared his positive impressions of a recent phone call with U.S. President-elect Donald Trump, describing it as “detailed and good.” Speaking with Süddeutsche Zeitung, Scholz admitted he was pleasantly surprised by the conversation following Trump’s reelection last week.
During their November 10 call, the two leaders discussed Ukraine at length. While Scholz refrained from sharing specifics, he noted that Trump’s stance seemed “more nuanced than often assumed” in Germany.
The German chancellor also addressed concerns about potential agreements between Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin over Ukraine, dismissing any indications of such plans based on his discussion with Trump.
On the same day, Scholz spoke with Putin for the first time in nearly two years, according to German media. Their hour-long call comes amid ongoing tensions over Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.
