Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan plans to present his “peace plan” for Russia’s war against Ukraine at the G20 summit in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, according to sources cited by Bloomberg.
Erdogan’s proposal reportedly includes freezing military actions along current frontlines. As a concession to Kremlin leader Vladimir Putin, the Turkish president also suggests postponing discussions on Ukraine’s NATO membership for at least 10 years, the sources claim.
The plan further involves creating a demilitarized zone in eastern Donbas, where Russia has controlled significant territories since 2014. Erdogan is expected to propose deploying international forces there as a security guarantee and providing Ukraine with military supplies as compensation for agreeing to delay NATO membership.
Turkish officials acknowledge that such a proposal might be difficult for Ukraine to accept but consider it the most realistic approach. They aim to defer debates over the long-term status of occupied territories and prioritize achieving a stable ceasefire, the report states.
According to the sources, Erdogan hopes to persuade Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky to participate in peace talks in Istanbul. Erdogan is reportedly relying on intelligence indicating that Ukraine could lose more territory in the coming months if hostilities continue.
