Switzerland: Afghan migrant desecrates Black Madonna and crowns himself

An unsettling incident unfolded in Einsiedeln, Switzerland, when an Afghan asylum seeker barged into the chapel during the service, targeting the revered figure of the Black Madonna His actions left onlookers in disbelief.

The man reportedly struck the Black Madonna statue, disrobed it, and then placed the statue’s crown on his own head. The chaotic episode ended when priests and police intervened, restraining the individual. Authorities from the canton of Schwyz later detained him, placing him in a psychiatric facility.

Einsiedeln Abbey, a historic and spiritual landmark, responded to the attack on its website. Without naming the perpetrator, they referred to the event as an “unfortunate incident” caused by a “confused person.”

In a heartfelt message, the monastery stated, “We deeply regret this incident and think of the many people who have been injured in their religious feelings on site. Our prayers and thoughts are with them, as well as with the person detained by the police.” While the attacker’s motives remain unknown, the abbey urged for peace and healing, calling for a rosary prayer the following day centered on “peace and reconciliation.”

Fortunately, the damage to the Black Madonna was minor. This cherished late Gothic sculpture, crafted from linden wood in the 15th century, holds deep spiritual significance for countless pilgrims who visit the Einsiedeln Abbey. Known as a symbol of grace and devotion, the Black Madonna continues to be a focal point of reverence despite the incident.

While the community processes this unsettling event, the monastery’s response underscores a commitment to unity, healing, and understanding in the face of adversity.
