The European Union claims to have evidence that Chinese-made drones are being used by Russia in its conflict with Ukraine, sparking threats of repercussions from Germany’s Foreign Minister, Annalena Baerbock.
Speaking at an EU meeting in Brussels, Baerbock emphasized the stakes, stating, “This must and will have consequences,” and underscoring that the war threatens freedom across Europe and impacts all European nations.
Germany and the EU are investigating allegations that China is aiding Russia through drone production, a claim Beijing has strongly denied. According to an EU official, intelligence reports indicate that drones supplied to Russia are being manufactured in China as part of a collaborative effort involving Russia, China, and Iran. While evidence is still being scrutinized, any confirmed collaboration between Beijing and Moscow on military equipment could lead to sanctions.
China has pushed back against these accusations. Foreign Ministry spokesman Lin Jian firmly reiterated, “China has always taken a responsible stance and has never provided the parties to the conflict with lethal weapons.” He added that China strictly regulates drones with military applications and urged countries to avoid baseless allegations and damaging China’s reputation without proof.
The EU has already sanctioned Iran for supplying drones and missiles to Russia. Measures include restrictions on Iran Air and prohibitions on exporting components from the EU that could support missile and drone production. If China is found to be involved, similar sanctions could follow.
