Finland’s Central Criminal Police has confirmed it received a request from Cinia Oy, the cable operator, to investigate the severing of the C-Lion1 underwater communication cable connecting Finland and Germany in the Baltic Sea.
In a statement, the Central Criminal Police announced it is opening an investigation into the incident. Cinia Oy reported on Monday that a fault had been discovered, causing the cable to go offline. Both Finland and Germany later expressed concern over the damage to the underwater cable and confirmed a thorough investigation would be conducted.
German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius stated that the cable break could indicate sabotage, although no conclusive evidence has been found so far. The C-Lion1 cable is the first direct connection between Finland and Germany; previous communication routes passed through Sweden and Denmark. The cable was laid between October 2015 and January 2016.
