In Germany, violence against women is at alarming levels, with a woman murdered nearly every day. A staggering 938 attempted killings were reported in 2023 alone, with foreigners involved in a third of the cases.
A recent report from the Federal Criminal Police Office (BKA) exposes troubling trends about the perpetrators behind these crimes.
The figures reveal a sharp rise in crimes targeting women. In 2023, 360 women were murdered simply because of their gender, and 578 others narrowly escaped death in attempted killings. The BKA notes that over 80% of female homicide victims were killed by their partners or ex-partners, emphasizing a critical need for better awareness, prevention, and research.
Federal Interior Minister Nancy Faeser (SPD) expressed her outrage, stating, “Almost every day we see a woman’s murder in Germany. This is unbearable. Every three minutes a woman or girl experiences domestic violence here. Every day, more than 140 women and girls become victims of sexual assault.”
The statistics paint a stark picture: out of the 938 cases, 264 suspects (about 32%) were non-German nationals, a significant overrepresentation. However, the BKA doesn’t disclose the migration background of the remaining 563 suspects. Victims, for the most part, are German—making up 73.8% of the total.
But it’s not just homicides and attempted killings that raise concerns. More than 52,000 women and girls were victims of sexual crimes like rape in 2023. Of the suspects in these cases, 12,486 (about 34%) were non-German. Foreign nationals were particularly prevalent in cases of pimping, where 75% of suspects were foreigners.
Domestic violence cases also saw a rise, up 5.6% to 180,000 victims. However, the BKA warns that the full scope of violence is even greater, as many cases go unreported or are categorized under multiple crime types. The true extent of the crisis remains far higher than what the official statistics show.
