Dutch Foreign Minister Caspar Veldkamp announced that the country would comply with the International Criminal Court (ICC) warrant and arrest Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu if he visits the Netherlands.
According to the Dutch Foreign Minister, “The Netherlands fully adheres to the Rome Statute,” which serves as the basis for the ICC’s operations in The Hague.
Veldkamp assured that Netanyahu would be arrested if he arrives in the Netherlands. Furthermore, the country will also suspend “non-essential” contacts with the Israeli Prime Minister.
As noted by NOS, it is still unclear how the ICC’s decision regarding Netanyahu’s arrest warrant will impact the Dutch Foreign Minister’s planned trip to the Middle East. Dutch right-wing Party for Freedom leader Geert Wilders had also planned a visit to Israel.
Earlier on Thursday, it was reported that the ICC had issued arrest warrants for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and former Defense Minister Yoav Galant.
They are accused of war crimes and crimes against humanity during the conflict in the Gaza Strip.
