Man arrested in Greece after weapons cache found in apartment

Greek anti-terrorism police have arrested a 49-year-old teacher after discovering a weapons and explosives stash in his apartment in central Athens this week.

On Wednesday, police found hand grenades, firearms, and more than 12 kg of explosives, including TNT and ammonium dynamite, in the apartment.

The discovery was reported by the landlord, who had been renting the apartment to the teacher since 2008.

The suspect, who had no previous criminal record, was identified after reviewing surveillance footage. He had rented the apartment using fake documents and initially claimed that he wanted to use the space to store books, according to police sources speaking on condition of anonymity.

The arrested man is expected to appear before a prosecutor on Friday.

Earlier in November, police arrested several people following an explosion in an apartment on the third floor of a building in central Athens, which resulted in the death of a man believed to have been assembling a homemade bomb.
