Viktor Orbán: Hungary must pursue a prudent policy amid military concerns

Prime Minister Viktor Orbán stated that Hungary must continue pursuing “sober” politics as the most dangerous months of the Russia-Ukraine war lie ahead.

Speaking in a radio interview, he emphasized that Hungary’s direct interests were at stake, particularly due to the conflict’s proximity and the presence of ethnic Hungarians in Ukraine. Orbán warned of the risks from escalating weapons use and the potential for Hungary to face a direct threat.

He also expressed confidence that peace was within reach due to Donald Trump’s election win, but noted that the outgoing U.S. administration’s policies complicated the situation. Orbán underlined that Hungary would maintain a pragmatic and calm approach, focused on survival and national interests.

Regarding U.S. involvement, Orbán cautioned that if America stopped supporting Ukraine, Europe would have little hope for victory, stressing the military and economic consequences of a potential Ukrainian defeat. He added that Hungary would continue to pursue its sovereign foreign policy, unshaken by external pressures, and was committed to making decisions based on its own national interests.
