The Biden administration briefly considered publicly advocating for Ukraine’s formal invitation to join NATO in the aftermath of Donald Trump’s electoral victory but ultimately decided against it. This was reported by Bloomberg, citing sources.
The proposal was aimed at bolstering support for Kyiv amid fears that Trump might push for negotiations with Russia. However, the White House concluded that such an initiative had little chance of succeeding in the short term.
Instead, bilateral security agreements with Ukraine are seen as a more viable option.
The report also notes that while President Biden is working to provide maximum support to Kyiv before the end of his term, his options are limited.
Much of the remaining funding can only be used for weapons already in Pentagon stockpiles. However, depleting these reserves too significantly could jeopardize the United States’ own defense capabilities, the article states.
