In the French city of Annecy, about 4,000 people were evacuated on Sunday, November 24, due to a 230-kilogram World War II bomb found at a construction site in one of the city’s neighborhoods.
The bomb was discovered during ongoing construction work, prompting authorities to conduct a large-scale operation to defuse it.
On Sunday morning, sirens from police vehicles woke the residents of Annecy, alerting them to evacuate. They were advised to go to relatives’ homes or a designated meeting point. The evacuation operation was completed by 9 AM.
However, some residents refused to leave their homes and were required to remain indoors for the entire day. Anyone seen outdoors would face fines. Traffic in the area where the bomb was being disarmed was completely halted, and all activities in the vicinity were prohibited for the duration of the operation.
The demining operation caused significant disruptions on many roads. Residents will be allowed to return to the area only after the operation is concluded.
