Elon Musk has escalated his ongoing feud with the British government, calling the UK a “tyrannical police state” and promoting a petition demanding a fresh general election.
The owner of X, formerly Twitter, also shared a documentary by a jailed right-wing activist with his millions of followers, further fueling his clash with the UK’s government.
Musk, who has had a contentious relationship with the newly elected center-left Labour government in the UK, responded to a viral online petition calling for an immediate general election, despite the fact that the country just held elections in July, which saw Labour’s landslide victory.
Musk commented, “The people of Britain have had enough of a tyrannical police state.”
This latest outburst came after Musk shared a graph showing a decline in Prime Minister Keir Starmer’s approval ratings, adding, “The voice of the people is a great antidote.”
The tension between Musk and the British government began earlier this year, following the tragic killing of three schoolgirls in Southport. Musk criticized the U.K. government’s handling of the case.
Over the weekend, Musk also questioned why right-wing figurehead Tommy Robinson had been jailed for breaching a court order related to a documentary he made about a Syrian refugee schoolboy. Musk shared Robinson’s documentary on his platform, which has over 200 million users.
When asked about Musk’s comments, a spokesperson for Prime Minister Starmer responded, stating that the prime minister “looks forward to working with President Trump and his whole team, including Elon Musk” to strengthen the “special U.K.-U.S. relationship.”
