French farmers are ramping up demonstrations against bureaucratic barriers and a proposed EU free trade agreement with South America. Starting Tuesday, protests will escalate across the country and continue through Thursday, according to the nation’s largest agricultural union.
The timing coincides with the National Assembly’s discussion of the trade deal with MERCOSUR countries. Demonstrations are planned in front of the European Parliament building in Strasbourg, as well as other locations nationwide.
The French Biodiversity Office in the Creuse department and prefects in several regions have filed complaints over damages caused during prior protests by farmers.
Meanwhile, in Poland, farmers who blocked the Medyka border with Ukraine last week are considering resuming their protests on December 10, potentially expanding them along the eastern border. Unlike the French demonstrations, their grievances are not connected to trade with Ukraine.
