Georgia’s Speaker of Parliament, Shalva Papuashvili, has proposed December 14 as the date for the country’s upcoming presidential elections. If the election is held on this date, the inauguration of the new president could occur on December 29.
For the first time in Georgia’s history, the president will be selected indirectly through an electoral college of 300 members. Salome Zourabichvili, the current president, was the last to be elected through direct voting in a general election, with her term ending in December 2024.
The electoral college will consist of 150 members of parliament, 20 representatives from the Supreme Council of Abkhazia, 21 from the Supreme Council of Adjara, and 109 delegates from local self-government bodies.
The presidential elections will be held in the Parliament Palace. To win in the first round, a candidate must secure at least two-thirds of the votes. If no candidate achieves this threshold, a second round will be held between the top two candidates, and the one who receives the most votes in the second round will be declared president.
